Advanced PubMed Course

This course will include the following topics:

  • Searching PubMed (free text, MeSH Terms and subheadings, other search fields), the relation between PubMed en Medline, MeSH vocabulary, limiting options, linking to full text articles.
  • Also the filters for "clinical queries", concerning therapy, diagnosis,
    etiology and prognosis, and for systematic reviews and meta-analysis
    studies are covered.
  • Although the emphasis in this course will be on searching techniques, also several aspects of search strategy are considered.
  • The course will include both demonstrations and hand-on training.
  • The course is intended for those who have already some experience in searching PubMed.


At the end of this course, participants can perform a rather broad variety in PubMed searches, and they can use several strategies for refining their searches.

Dieuwke Brand is a biologist. She is reference librarian in the Walaeus Library of the Leiden University Medical Center. She has a broad experience in Medline and PubMed instructions.
