All About Segway: Where Did This Practical and Trendy Transpo Come From?

history of segway

Cars, motorcycles, scooters, these are the common transportation vehicles we often see every day. However, in some parts of the world, they have this unique vehicle called “Segway” which looks and operates differently from the bunch.

So what is this “Segway” thing all about? Let’s have a look.

History of Segway

It all started by a man named Dean Kamen, the inventor of Segway. It was first introduced back in 2001, a year where people are still lamenting about the tragic 9/11 event.

Kamen had high hopes for the Segway, marking his unique invention as the next big thing for human transportation. Kamen named the device from the word “segue” , which means a smooth transition from one thing to the other.

At first glance, the Segway is near identical to a scooter. But what lies beneath its technology is where it shines differently.

What Made Segway Unique?

The Segway is composed of sophisticated materials and connections. It has 5 gyroscopes that enables the device to turn in any direction you want to go. This lets the Segway achieve a self-balancing state that Kamen calls “Dynamic Stabilization.”

The gyroscopes are then paired with multiple tilt sensors that monitor the rider’s center of gravity. As a result, it gives you the feeling of gliding on air instead of just riding a transportation device just like what you’d feel on a scooter.

A Variety of Segway’s for Everyone

Over the years, Kamen’s invention got multiple versions that are made by different companies. These versions have added features and more appealing designs that can truly catch one’s attention.

However, this also means increasing price tags as well. The original Segway is already expensive enough, and it’s feeling more like a fortune because of other company’s iteration of the device.

It’s Eco-friendly

The big advantage of Segway over cars and motorcycles is it’s eco-friendliness. The Segway is powered by a rechargeable battery, not fuel. It doesn’t emit any smoke and noise as you hit the road with it.

That’s why riding a Segway makes you feel like you’re floating on air. If you opt for a Segway instead of fuel-powered vehicles, you are helping the world to have a much cleaner and greener environment.

It’s also a good investment too. If you think of it, you don’t have to spend cash on fuel because you only need to charge it at home. It’s definitely a win-win situation for you and your wallet.

But There’s a Catch

As good as it sounds, there are some things that you need to keep in mind when using a Segway.

For instance, a Segway only has two wheels upfront, so you need to practice your balance when using such.

You also need to be mindful of its battery capacity. You cannot use a Segway as your travel companion. It’s not like a car or any other fuel-powered vehicle that can survive for miles without dying. Segways are useful if you’re going to work, school, buy some groceries, or getting your much-needed caffeine at Starbucks.
